Βαθιά ριζωμένος από τους πρώτους λαούς ως τα σημερινά έθνη ο χορός, αποτελούσε και αποτελεί ένα γιομάτο αυθορμητισμό αντικαθρέπτισμα της ψυχής του ανθρώπου. Έχει τη μοναδική ικανότητα να συγχωνεύει, να συνδυάζει, τις φυσικές και συναισθηματικές πλευρές της ύπαρξής μας, σε ολοκληρωμένη έκφραση.
Στην Κρήτη, η χορευτική παράδοση ξεκινά από τους μυθικούς χρόνους. Έφτασαν ως εμάς μάλιστα και τα ονόματα δυο διάσημων Κρητικών χορευτών, του Ομηρικού ήρωα Μηριόνη και του μεταγενέστερου Ζήνωνα του Κρητικού.
Οι πρώτες χορευτικές κινήσεις, όπως μαρτυρείται, γινότανε με τα πόδια, γιατί τα πόδια έπρεπε περισσότερο να γυμναστούν για τους αγώνες και το κυνήγι. Οι Κρητικοί δε που αγαπούσαν το κυνήγι, φημιζότανε για τη γρηγοράδα τους.
Ότι ήσαν αλαφροπάτητοι οι κρητικοί χορευτές, τονίζει και ο Όμηρος στην Ιλιάδα «Εχόρευαν με πόδια μαθημένα τόσο ελαφριά…» το ίδιο και η Σαπφώ: «Κι οι Κρητικές λοιπόν κάποτε ρυθμικά με τα πόδια τ’ απαλά τους χορεύουν…».
Ο ιδιόμορφος ψυχισμός του Μινωίτη χορευτή αποπνέει όλο χάρη, δροσιά και προπαντός κίνηση.
Στη μεγάλη χορευτική δεξιότητα των Κρητικών, εκτός από τις παραδοσιακές ροπές και την έμφυτη κλίση στην κίνηση βοήθησε η μουσική και η παράλληλη καλλιέργειά της.
Ο Κρητικός, ριμαδόρος, τραγουδιστής και χορευτής, συντηρεί ως τις μέρες μας την προγονική κληρονομιά, με το ίδιο πάθος και την ίδια εκφραστικότητα.
