Λόγω του έντονα παγανιστικού χαρακτήρα του καρναβαλιού, η γιορτή δεν έχει την έγκριση της εκκλησίας της Ελλάδας.Παρόλα αυτά οι τοπικές αρχές συμμετέχουν επίσημα και υποστηρίζουν ενεργά τις εκδηλώσεις ως μέρος της τοπικής παράδοσης, ενώ στις εκδηλώσεις περιλαμβάνονται ελεύθερα και κανονικότατα έως και δημοτικά σχολεία με παιδιά νεαρής ηλικίας!!

Το ονομαστό «Μπουρανί» που είναι λέξη τούρκικη και σημαίνει λαχανόρυζο ή σπανακόρυζο είχε άλλον τρόπο παρασκευής από τους Μπουρανίτες, οι οποίοι χορεύουν γύρω από το καζάνι που βράζει η σούπα.
Αναφέρεται από τις τοπικές αρχές πως οι καταβολές του είναι από την αρχαιότητα, ενώ οι πρώτες γνωστές γραπτές αναφορές για την τέλεση του καρναβαλιού εμφανίζονται το 1898.Κατά την διάρκεια του 20ού αιώνα υπήρξε έντονη κριτική προς την τέλεση της διοργάνωσης η οποία θεωρήθηκε ασεβής, και υπήρξαν και περίοδοι όπου απαγορεύτηκε όπως κατά την περίοδο της χούντας. Επανεμφανίστηκε το 1980 και έκτοτε η φήμη του αυξήθηκε. Η ημέρα με την μεγαλύτερη δραστηριότητα είναι η τελευταία Κυριακή του καρναβαλιού όπου γίνεται και παρέλαση αρμάτων με την συμμετοχή χιλιάδων ανθρώπων.
Η γιορτή είναι προς τιμή του αρχαιοελληνικού θεού Διονύσου και γίνεται στο ξεκίνημα του ελληνορθόδοξου Πάσχα κατά την περίοδο της νηστείας. Κατά την διάρκεια των εκδηλώσεων τελούνται επίσης συναυλίες, χοροί, πορεία του καρναβαλιού, καθώς και όρκος στον βασιλιά Καρνάβαλο. Την γενική εποπτεία του καρναβαλιού αναλαμβάνει άτομο με τον τίτλο του αρχιμπουρανίτη.
